Take a nap

On my road trip this weekend, I was reminded about one awesome thing I discovered as a first generation and low income college student: Naps are not just for little kids.

Naps are necessary on long road trips and, in fact, make a huge comeback in college for most folks. Seriously, they do. Naps are pure awesomeness, no joke.

I was a fan of napping in college and routinely recommend it to my students. Here are some tips to keep in mind for proper napping:

Timing is everything: A good nap should only be 20-30 minutes, so set an alarm. Anything more than 30 minutes or so is a mini-sleep, not a nap, which can actually make you feel more tired.

Be comfy: Make sure you have a good, comfortable napping environment. Quiet and dark are typically best. If possible, make sure you are dressed comfortably too.

Plan for it: Scheduling naps can be helpful and make you more productive. You can also make sure you don't nap too closely to your regular bedtime and mess up your regular sleep schedule.

Check out the National Sleep Foundation for more information about napping and get some sleep. Good night.
