"Thanks for your help on my resume. I was wondering if I should list my classes on my resume, too? My friend says its a good idea but I don't know."If you are a current first generation or low income college student or recent graduate, listing some of your classes on your resume might be appropriate, if those classes are related to what you are applying for.
For example, if you are communications major applying for a marketing internship and you have taken some marketing classes, it might be a good idea to list those classes on your resume. On the other hand, if you are a life sciences major applying to be a Resident Advisor, most of your classes will not be relevant.
When listing classes on your resume, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, Don't list every single class that you have taken, only the most relevant ones. You wouldn't want to list basic or introductory-level classes, only upper-division and more advanced classes, unless those intro classes help you qualify for the position.
You also want to make sure you use the course title and not the number or abbreviation, so say "Viral Marketing Strategies" instead of "Marketing 154" because those class numbers mean little beyond your college itself.
As far as where to actually list your classes on your resume, generally you would include "Relevant Coursework" as part of your Education, just make sure it is clean and easy to read. It might look something like this:

ReplyDeleteCarrie, generally listing 2-6 classes gets the job done, but there is no precise number of classes to list. Just keep it clean and easy to read and only list relevant classes.

what about computer classes? I took several computer classes such as java, oracle, web development etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteI have no real life job experience in those and even though I did well in those classes, I wouldn't say I could program. Should I list those even if I feel weak in those areas and if so, should I list that under experience or part of my education section?

ReplyDeleteLike I said, don't list every single class that you have taken, only the most relevant ones. So if theory is relevant, listing a few classes might be appropriate. You might want to ask your professors and a few people in your industry for their take on it. Good luck!

However, some of my relevant coursework is from my previous school. Should I list my previous school or just include those classes along with the others?

I graduated with my degree in the Arts, and I am unsure if it would be helpful to include the names of the well-known professors whom I took relevant courses with? If so, how would I go about including that?

ReplyDeleteI've taken this course, and although I did not do well in it, I still know the basics of it and it is completely relevant to the internship I am applying to. I'm not very good at test taking, which is what the grade reflected, but I can still talk about what I learned. The only thing I fear is if they ask me about my grade. I'm not lying on my resume when I said I took the course, but I am drawing attention to a bad grade..
