Off-campus resources

When it comes to first generation and low income college students, I am a huge proponent of advocating the use of resources--and that usually means on-campus resources specific to your college. But those are not the only resources out there. As a first generation or low income college student, look beyond your campus for community resources, too!

Community resources, especially if you have relocated for school, can be invaluable to your success in college. Community resources might include, but are not limited to:
  • Churches or religious-based services
  • Support groups
  • Counseling centers
  • Recreation centers or gyms
  • Low-cost or subsidized childcare or after-school programs
  • Housing services
Find these types of community resources by checking out local media, talking to community members, and getting out there yourself. Or just Google it. Like I've said before concerning resources, you never really know when you (or a friend) may need to use a resource, so knowing your options beforehand is your best bet.

Got questions? Please feel free to ask The Advisor about it.
